Evaluation Contest

March 2, 2011

On Thursday, February 10th, our club held its first contest of 2011.  The Evaluation Contest is designed to highlight one of the best features of Toastmasters:  members can enhance their skills in listening carefully, thinking analytically, and expressing ideas appropriately—and in this way, members learn to give and receive feedback on speeches.

This year we capitalized on the fine connection between Toast of CIBC and our sister club, Plaza Speakers. Plaza provided two external judges. We also heard the talented Alice Lai-Ma deliver a speech on “GO Commuter Etiquette”—a funny yet pointed commentary on an urban dilemma.  It was critiqued by five contestants, who had 2-3 minutes to deliver an oral assessment of Alice ‘s speech and make recommendations for improvement.  Almost every evaluator ranked a snippet of song that Alice included as a “plus” for the speech and almost every evaluator had an opinion on the “snakes and ladders” sketch that Alice showed in explaining the etiquette of queuing. Not only was it a “bang-up” speech, but the audience had fun comparing five different styles of evaluation and some creative recommendations.

We congratulate the winners of the 2011 Evaluation Contest:

First Place – Hondy Hung

Second Place – Ron Tsang

Third Place – Shar Noaman

Hondy and Ron will be going on to represent our club at the Area level.

We congratulate all contestants — everyone “stretched” a little in competing at the Club contest level.

We encourage you to visit our sister club.  Plaza Speakers operates out of Scotiabank at King & Bay, Mezzanine Floor.  They meet every Tuesday at noon — that makes it easy for our members to visit their club once in a while to observe how they run meetings… or, who knows, maybe to return the favour of a target speech!

District 60 Humorous Speech Contest

February 2, 2011

Toast of CIBC had several members attend the recent [Nov 20, 2010] District 60 Humorous Speech contest at the Yorkland Hotel.  Deborah provided the following report.

I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t the foggiest idea what a Toastmasters’ Conference entailed. I joined Toastmasters in late 2009 without much knowledge of the club as an international entity. I understood what I knew and had exposure to with Toast of CIBC. I knew how our club ran and who to talk to when I had a concern. I always believed our club has a very good calibre of speakers. I attended club competitions and had a good time watching and listening to the speakers.

So when I received that itinerary for the conference, I decided to check out the humorous speech contest. This was my chance to get a sampling of the level of speaking any member is capable of achieving. One has to keep in mind that these are the top speakers from many clubs—the crème de la crème of speakers, so to speak.

I was amazed by the ease and confidence these speakers possessed on stage. It felt like each one was a natural speaker by birth. But I’m sure it likely wasn’t the case, since most people who seem to get into Toastmasters are not naturally inclined to be excellent speakers from the get-go.

I always thought that our club meetings were strict and very organized but this took the cake. It was as if all the things we do at our club were amplified to make it even more organized and strict! For someone like me, this was heaven. I loved the stringency of organization and flow. Despite this, the humour still spilled from all the speakers (including the host) which let the audience relax and enjoy the show.

It was certainly an eye opening experience for me. I hadn’t had the chance to really experience another Toastmasters group’s organized event but this was certainly a new experience that I felt helped me expand my understanding of Toastmasters International as well as being able to take back some styles which these speakers used during their speeches.

Thanks Deborah.

Hopefully, next time, it will it be you, sharing your experience, with us from one of our contests.

We Did It Again

June 16, 2010

Toast of CIBC completes another outstanding year on June 30.  Our many notable accomplishments include:

  • Two of our club members competed in Division F level speech contests in the spring:  Sheila Watson (Evaluator Contest) and Hondy Hung (International Speech Contest).
  • Once again this year, we achieved President’s Distinguished Club status, the highest level of Toastmasters club success.
  • Congratulations to those who added designations this year:
    • Competent Communicators, Anton Coetzee, Peter Lizon, Amy Xu and Arindam Maitra.
    • Competent Leaders, Sheila Watson and Robin Ji.
    • Advanced Communicator Bronze, Sheila Watson.
    • Advanced Leader Bronze, Sheila Watson.
  • Several other members are close to achieving Advanced Communicator Bronze, most notably Anton Coetzee, Victoria Barclay, and Lin Zhu.
  • In addition, we added eleven members to the club and have been very visible contributors at the Area and Division levels of Toastmasters.
  • We held our annual Social Event on May 19 at Marche Restaurant, BCE Place.  It was a highly enjoyable experience for those who attended.  Expect more such gatherings soon!
  • It is with great pleasure that we announce our current President, Sheila Watson, has been appointed Division F Governor.  In the new Toastmasters year commencing July 1, Sheila will have oversight of six Areas comprising twenty-two Clubs in downtown Toronto.  Toast of CIBC is very proud and wishes her the best of luck in the new role!
  • Why suffer boredom this summer?  Toast of CIBC will be active throughout the summer months, meeting every Thursday at 12.00, usually in the Commerce Court North Second Floor Boardroom at 25 King Street W.  Come out and see us for an uplifting hour in your week.
